Fundraiser race benefits the Young Athletes Foundation

(Duluth, MN) – A record field of 2,130 people registered to compete in the 29th annual Fitger’s 5K Run and Walk in Downtown Duluth today. The 3.1-mile race began at 9:00 a.m. outside of the Fitger’s Brewery Complex. Participants traveled on a course down Superior Street and into Canal Park before finishing back near Fitger’s at the Pickwick Restaurant.

The first place men’s division finisher was Nate Routhier, (15:35) of Rochester, MN, and in the women’s division, Ellen Smith (18:26) also from Rochester, MN. Both Routhier and Smith are part of the Mill City Running Club. In 2017, Scott Behling won the race with a time of 15:54, and Anna Lahti with a time of 19:56. Meanwhile in the walk division, John Munich (36:10) of Superior, WI, and Ariel Moses (30:16) of Hopkins, MN, were the champions of the men and women divisions respectively.

An unofficial record total of 2,005 participants (1854 runners, 151 walkers) started the 3.1-mile race.

All net proceeds – over $20,000 – from the Fitger’s 5K benefit the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF), a Grandma's Marathon program focused on the promotion and development of youth athletics in the region.
