I'd like to get some feedback from RDs of events which raise money for charity. When you publicize your total dollars raised what do you include in the totals?

Donations made by runners thenselves
Donations runners have obtained from others besides themselves
Donations made by sponsors
Funds raised through "team in training" programs
Entry income raised race in exchange for a charitable contribution (usually in excess of the standard entry fee)
Other?

You certainly see some massive figures out there for dollars raised and it would be interesting to know how these figures were derived.

Typically, the races I've worked with that were raising money for a cause and that cared to publicize their totals include sponsorship funds, registration funds, and individual donations. The total that gets publicized is the net once all race expenses are subtracted.

Road Race exceeds $1 million raised

Falmouth, Mass. – The CIGNA Falmouth Road Race shattered its fund-raising record at last month’s 35th running, raising $1.05 million for the 42 non-profit groups it supports with its “numbers-for-nonprofits” program.

Each year the race directors provide guaranteed entries, exempt from the lottery and with an extended deadline, to selected charities. The charities then offer the entries to runners, who solicit donations for the non-profit. More than 600 people participated in the program this year.

Runners in the 2006 race raised $861,318 and the total for the past five years is more than $3.5 million.

CIGNA Falmouth got over $1 million this year. Any other races, non-marathon races, raise that much?
