Putting on an event for a charity

I am working to setup and put on a race where all proceeds will benefit a charity. Have any of you owned an event like this and how do you deal with sponsor $$? Do you find they don't want to donate to your company and would rather donate straight to the charity?

I have an event that traditionally benefits a charity and all the entry fees go the charity but we are talkaing about hard copy checks written to the charity and sent to me. If using online not sure exactly how that would work.

The group I am assisting is using entry fees to offset costs. They have a team that is getting $ from sponsors. The charity's 501c3 letter is provided as part of the sponsorship request.
