I find the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon's invited athlete philosophy interesting as stated in thier Invited Media Brief http://www.rrm.com/Newsarchives/archive07/07keybankinvites.htm
Our philosophy in assembling the invited runner field for the VCM is clearly to strive for compatibility among the runners both male and female. We purposely avoid bringing in someone who is significantly faster than everyone else just for the sake of establishing a new course record. What we are always looking for are races that will be close and interesting. We are not a big city event and we aren’t looking for big event 1st echelon runners. We pride ourselves on supporting hard-working, second-echelon runners who are holding down full time jobs and running because they love doing it. Having the opportunity to compete for modest prize money is a reward for their diligent efforts.
