Coatcheck? What's a coatcheck?

I was reading the October RRM, and "coatcheck" was mentioned. I am not a new race director, but this is a new term to me. My guess is that this is a formal equipment gathering effort further down the race course, like Mile 2 or 4, where runners can throw clothing to be returned later. Can anyone confirm this? Does this work? Right now, our runners toss clothing as they run and it's either returned or not.

I have never seen a marathon with a "coatcheck" either. The person being quoted was discussing (somewhat facetiously, I believe) some of the amenities that very slow marathoners might look for.
