Named 2012 MarathonFoto/Road Race Management Race Director of the Year
committee made up of race directors, athletes, media, corporate
executives and club officials has named
Kirby Nicol, Director of the Wharf to Wharf Race (Santa Cruz, CA), as the MarathonFoto/Road Race Management Race Director of the Year.
Nicol was honored at a reception at the Road Race Management Race Directors’ Meeting in Hollywood, FL on November 8. The award is presented by Electric City Printing.
“From a large and very impressive field of well-qualified candidates, Kirby emerged as the winner,” said Road Race Management President Phil Stewart. Described by Bill Rodgers as “the Gold Medal of race directing,” the award is one of the most prestigious honors in the sport of road racing. “Anyone nominated should be proud of their accomplishments,” added Stewart.
In making the presentation Stewart said, “Kirby Nicol has been the ultimate runners’ race director for over 30 years. Starting with 273 runners in the first Wharf to Wharf race in 1983, he has continually infused the event with all of the bells and whistles that runners have wanted over the following three decades, ranging from prize money in the more competitive 1980s, to over 50 bands on the course in the more casual 21st century. In addition, the event invests $200,000 into local running activities in the Santa Cruz community annually. Obviously he has been successful, as the race attracts a capped field of 15,000 runners each year and is a must-stop on the local, national and international running calendars.”
Among its accomplishments, the race has provided support that has led to the construction of eight all-weather tracks, has provided grants and scholarships to the local community, and injects $8 million dollars into the local economy over the race weekend.
The MarathonFoto/Road Race Management Race Director of the Year award (presented by Electric City Printing) is made annually to recognize and promote excellence in race directing.
