Carl Guardino Named 2015 MarathonFoto/Road Race Management
Race Director of the Year
A committee made up of race directors, athletes, media, corporate executives and club officials has named
Carl Guardino, Director of the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot, the MarathonFoto/Road Race Management Race Director of the Year.
Guardino was honored at a reception at the Road Race Management Race Directors' Meeting in Hollywood, FL on November 5. The award is presented by Electric City Printing.
"From a large and very impressive field of well-qualified candidates, Carl Guardino emerged as the winner," said Road Race Management President Phil Stewart. Described by Bill Rodgers as
"the Gold Medal of race directing," the award is one of the most prestigious honors in the sport of road racing.
"Anyone nominated should be proud of their accomplishments," said Stewart.
In presenting the award Stewart added,
"Our 2015 winner hails from the cradle of High Tech creativity; and the spirit of innovation definitely resides within him. In 2004, inspired by a Thanksgiving Day race in Sacramento, CA, he decided to launch a Thanksgiving Day run in his hometown of San Jose. Like many Silicon Valley start-ups, his event skyrocketed to success. Hoping for 1,000 starters and $100,000 in funds raised for charity the first year, his initial public offering in 2004 attracted 1,900 starters and raised $132,000. Eight years later, the event was the largest timed 5K event in the country; in 2014 there were 26,405 registrants, and the event raised $936,000 for charity. The event includes a kids run, 5K and 10K events and
a highly competitive criterium-style elite 5K with $25,000 in prize money,
which is ranked as one of the most competitive 5K events in the country. And this is a part-time undertaking for our winner, who has a demanding job as the President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a public policy trade association.
"For his vision, innovation, and management of Silicon Valley's greatest success story in the road racing world, we honor Carl Guardino, Director of the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot as the 2015 RRM Race Director of the Year."
